Keith A Norris
Some people grow up around music. Keith A Norris grew up inside of it.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee after two years moved and raised in California, he was immersed early in a world where ministry, performance, travel, and discipline all blended together. Both of his parents were involved in professional recording groups. Concerts were normal. Rehearsals were normal. Church services were normal. Music was not an extracurricular activity. It was oxygen.
His father pastored multiple churches throughout Southern California, which meant frequent moves. Keith attended two middle schools and two high schools. Adaptability was learned early. Over time,Keith became fluent in speaking Spanish. He grew up alongside two sisters and one brother in a household that was constantly in motion. Travel was part of childhood. Concert circuits across Southern California. Life was expansive.
The Beginning of Music
At nine years old, he sat behind a drum set. Rhythm came first.
He moved to bass guitar as a child, though he admits he never truly mastered it in those early years. At fourteen, he began taking piano lessons. It did not click immediately. He did not “catch on” in the conventional way.
Then something unconventional happened.
His mother, who could not play a single piano note, began teaching him anyway. She could sing. She could hear. She knew what she wanted the piano to sound like. So she would hum. Moan. Clap her lips together. Make percussive mouth sounds. Vocalize rhythms.
She would create the sound with her voice, and Keith would sit at the piano trying to mimic what he heard. It was chaotic. Creative. Relational. Completely nontraditional. It was also genius.
Without realizing it, he was learning pattern recognition. Musical phrasing. Interpretation. Translation from sound to structure. That early experience would later shape how he teaches music today. At Twenty One years old, he began playing for his father’s church. From that moment forward, music was not optional. It was purpose.
